Look Great! Feel Great! Together…

menopause reliefWhen I went into menopause at 42

And my husband turned 50.

We started to gain weight, like crazy…

We both eventually needed to lose 30 pounds each…

We tried and tried and tried…

We cut our calories…

We joined a gym…

We even hired a personal trainer…

Nothing worked!!!

The most frustrating part of our weight gain…

Was that my husband had been practicing, at the time,

Nutritional Medicine for 25 years…

And I was a nurse with a Health Coach Certificate in Integrative Nutrition.

We know nutrition…

We eventually discovered what our problems were.

It happened one evening when my husband and I were attending a medical conference.

We were in Las Vegas setting in a cocktail lounge having a drink…

An 86 year old physician that my husband had met was sitting with us.

We learned that he had recently ridden his bicycle over the Sierra.

My husband was telling him that he couldn’t ride his bike across town let alone over the Sierra.

We asked him what his secret was…

He said HORMONES.

The light went off in our heads…

We went to see a doctor in Southern California and he tested us.

We were both hormonal messes.

I no longer had any fat burning hormones…

And my husband had low Testosterone.

He claimed that the test had to be wrong because he was Latin…

He had drives that were very healthy.

We both believed that low testosterone caused low sex drive…

But we found out that was just one of the multitude of symptoms.

The number one symptom was a belly.

Other symptoms included droopy eyelids…

And Grump-Old-Man syndrome

And mild episodes of depression…

Also, low testosterone caused a loss of the drive to be social.

Give them a man chair, television and just leave them alone.

Now as for me?

I also gained 30 pounds, could not sleep, suffered from unexplained anxiety…

Battled with mild bouts of depression, loss of sex drive, vaginal issues…

And I found that I was happiest when I had 4 walls, a closed door, and was also left alone.

I got my hormones tested…

And my hormones were not only low…

but were very imbalanced!

Of course, when it comes to hormones, we women are much more complicated.

Men they just need to increase their testosterone and most of the time that will do it!

Women, we discovered, had 3 sets of hormones that went south after menopause.

First, it was our ovarian hormones, estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.

This causes us to gain weight, not sleep well and lose our drives…

Second, our thyroid hormones take a dump!

When they go, we lose our energy, hair and our skin starts to look crinkly…

Third, our adrenal hormones fatigue.

When the adrenals fatigue, we can’t handle stress any longer.

Any stress makes our life so frustrating.

So, we went back to this doctor in southern California…

And he wanted $20,000 to fix us!

We decided that we can learn how ourselves for a lot less.

We were right!

My husband eventually took the test to become board certified in Anti-Aging Medicine…

And Passed!

We combined our nutritional knowledge with our Anti-Aging knowledge…

We lost the weight and all of the symptoms we were having.

Then we became interested in Functional Medicine.

Functional medicine is optimizing the different systems of the body

That makes the whole run efficiently.

We added organ optimizations protocols and

We felt looked and felt better than we ever had.

We went on to open 7 clinics across Northern California

That specialized in men and women that were aging and gaining weight.

We opened all 7 clinics in less than 18 months.

We retired early…

My husband was sitting in his man chair with one mission…

Menopause and Nightshade Vegetables

menopause dietAt this point within in our program, we have found that if you still suffer from:

  • Low Energy
  • Digestive Issues-Heartburn, Diarrhea, Gas, IBS, Bloating
  • Moodiness, Anxiety, Depression
  • Headaches, Joint Pain and Stiffness, Muscle Aches
  • Sleeping Disturbances

Then it’s time to pull the shades, the nightshades that is.

Would you have guessed that potatoes, paprika, and eggplants have a strong commonality?

Along with tomatoes and peppers…

They all belong to The Nightshade Family.

If you do not suffer from any of the above symptoms…

You can skip this class.

But if you are like me…

Read it to learn something you didn’t know…

And use the knowledge to help others.

Most of my clients have no problem with nightshades.

But if you have a sensitivity to them…

You are probably classifying yourself as a difficult client.

So?

What’s A Nightshade?

They are the common white potato, eggplant, tomato, and pepper, both the painful and pleasurable peppers.

Nightshades are also the spices like paprika, red pepper, and cayenne pepper.

Nightshades also include this bad boy, belladonna, remember McBeth?

Some of you with different cultural backgrounds or grandparents in the know…

Saw them avoid nightshades altogether.

Nightshades were considered suspicious at best

But from research, a majority of my clients have no problems with nightshades.

But…

And that should be a

BUT!

If you’re having thyroid problems, gut problems and suffer from chronic fatigue…

We’re going to take a break from them during Phase TWO of HOPE.

And…

Maybe a permanent break if you see a dramatic positive difference in your energy levels and digestive health.

So what makes Nightshade fruits and vegetables so toxic to some people.

(Remember, tomatoes are a fruit.)

The same reason organic fresh oregano is to me.

IN-FLAM-MA-TION

Many of my colleagues blame the potent form of vitamin D in nightshades…

Others blame the alkaloids…

And the Paleo guys blame lectins…

Alkaloids include solanine found in potatoes,

Other alkaloids include nicotine and capsaicin found in tobacco and peppers.

These alkaloids are the plant’s natural God-given pesticides.

Pesticides are toxic!

But?

We are much different than those little tiny pests that attack plants.

So?

Why do some of you have such a hard time with Nightshades?

They trigger your body to inflame!

Thye trigger your body to have a civil war within itself.

Most of our clients with thyroid issues will also have a gut issue.

The permeability of the gut is increased by the toxins in nightshades…

And proteins that are never supposed to pass through the gut’s walls do.

Like gluten!

And when these proteins pass through the gut’s walls…

The immune system is triggered.

And WA LA!

You’re sick

This is the same problem my colleagues believe lectins cause.

Lectins are what in peanuts that make some people die.

I just got sooo dramatic.

But it’s true.

It’s estimated that 150 to 200 people die a year from peanuts.

So?

If lectins in peanuts can kill you…

They may make some of you sick.

So?

What should you do?

Rate your overall energy between 0 to 10

If you scored less than an 8

Or have

  • Gut issues
  • Autoimmune Diseases
  • Leaky Gut

You should eliminate Nightshades from your diet…

For at least one month!

After one month if you feel no better.

Bring them back…

If you feel much better…

Say bye bye to nightshades.

Now if you are like me and rate above an 8…

But have some mild gut and energy issues…

Do this:

  • Peel all potatoes (alkaloids are found in the skin)
  • Avoid green tomatoes
  • Avoid green and/or sprouting potatoes (unripe nightshades are higher in alkaloids)
  • Eat only cooked nightshades.

Legumes

I remember my father telling me about a scene in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre with Humphrey Bogart.

In the scene, the gringos meet a young Mexican boy that could run like the wind.

They asked him what he ate for breakfast?

“Beans and tortillas.”

How about lunch?

“Beans and tortillas.”

How about dinner?

“Beans and tortillas.”

I grew up eating beans and tortillas.

Yes, I’m a mejo.

Beans to me are a superfood.

Beans contain a lot of soluble fiber, protein, carbohydrates, folate, and iron.
They also contain anti-nutrients.

As I age and enter my “Third Act” of life…

I have found that we are healthier…

By avoiding the anti-nutrients found in legumes.

And, if you are trying to lose weight while in your third act…

Don’t even look at any food that has high levels of these anti-nutrients.

Lectin

Lectins are proteins found most foods.
Your genetic make-up and the foods you ate as a child…
Will determine how you will react to different lectins.
Toxic lectins are highest in grains, legumes, and dairy.

The lectins in legumes are anti-nutrients.

God placed nutrients that when eaten protect the plant or food from being overeaten and extinction.

These anti-nutrients can be harmful to not only animals but humans too.

Lectins are proteins that bind to carbohydrates.

When animals who eat lectins and if they are not adapted to them, they may experience illness, pain or even death.
Lectins may damage the intestines..

This could increase the permeability of your intestinal wall.

This may allow harmful molecules, such as lectins themselves, to pass through the intestinal wall.

These harmful substances will enter the bloodstream.

Where they can cause havoc with insulin receptors.

They may also desensitize your leptin receptors.

Leptin turns off hunger.

Lectins can then contribute to insulin and leptin resistance.

Two of the primary causes of diabetes and obesity.

And a major contributor to weight loss resistance.

Lectins may also work like gluten when it comes to your glands.

If lectins bind with a gland, like your thyroid, they may contribute to autoimmune diseases like Hashimoto’s

FYI, grains are also filled with lectins.

The two legumes with the highest concentrations of lectins are soybeans and peanuts.

Peanuts are not a nut.

While on a weight loss program, avoid all legumes.

When in phase THREE, we will reintroduce legumes that are on the low end of the lectin concentration scale.

We will see how your body reacts when clean.

If you do consume legumes, they should be eaten alone.

They are a meal in themselves.

Phytic Acid

Grains, nuts, and legumes contain phytic acid.
Phytic acid binds to the nutrients in the food.
By binding to the food, Phytic Acid prevents you from absorbing the nutrients found in grains, nuts, and legumes.
It makes the nutrient breakdown found on the label of all three not quite true.

Most nuts actually have more phytic acid than beans.

The key is the quantity you eat.

The Great American Diet of overeating would make all three of these Phytic Acid-containing foods on the avoid list.

Someone like me, I have an addiction to cashews, can probably eat the same amount of cashews in one sitting as I can beans.

Fodmaps

Legumes have fodmaps.

Legumes contain a carbohydrate called galaco-ligosaccharides.

You know the gas that accompanies a bowl of beans.

That’s caused by fodmaps.

This unpleasant digestive problem can make worse the gut problems we usually have in our “Third Act.”

Strike THREE!

In a nutshell;

  • Do not consume legumes, beans, if you are trying to lose weight.
  • The anti-nutrients found within legumes may damage your gut and contribute to leaky gut.
  • Lectins may contribute to diabetes and obesity by aiding in insulin and leptin resistance.

Menopause and Magnesium

While every woman and man is screwed up differently.

They all have different hormones, chemistries, and personalities.

Their symptoms are also varied from one person to the next.

There is no one recipe.

But there is one supplement that should always be in their fanny pack.

Magnesium!

Research has shown that it is one important hormone elixir.

  • PMS
  • PCOS
  • Thyroid Disorders
  • Perimenopause
  • Anxiety
  • Adrenal Fatigue
  • Gonadal Hormone Balance

I have yet met a woman or man that did not need a boost magnesium wise.

Magnesium is a necessary piece of the puzzle when it comes to all hormone production.

In Phase 3 we worked on our adrenal glands.

The primary hormone we needed to balance was cortisol.

Cortisol is your primary stress hormone.

You’ll learn more about it in that course.

Magnesium calms your adrenals and prevents the creation of excess cortisol.

When cortisol levels are balanced your levels of progesterone, estrogen, and testosterone will be better balanced.

Magnesium also helps control insulin production.

With better blood sugar levels you will have fewer cravings for sugary foods.

This will help you avoid blood sugar spikes, and you already know what that does, think gain weight.

In Phase TWO, we worked on our thyroid.

Magnesium helps with the production of the thyroid hormone.

Since magnesium improves progesterone levels…

And progesterone improves sleep…

Magnesium is an important part of our sleep program.

Magnesium has shown to not only help you fall asleep but stay asleep as well.

Magnesium also helps with nocturnal urination, which disturbs sleep as well.

Most menopausal women are deficient in magnesium.

Stress, sugar, and caffeine are the two primary depleters of magnesium.

How do we boost our magnesium?

Many of the foods rich in magnesium, chocolate, and seeds, are not what we would call weight loss foods.

Therefore, we used other methods.

My favorite…

Epsom salt baths.

I add 2 cups of salts, candles, and Vicky, and whoa…

No better way.

Vicky’s favorite way is magnesium oil.

She rubs it on her chest right over her heart.

I recommend this way to anyone that has a sleeping problem…

Or a gut issue.

We will work on the gut extensively in Phase TWO.

I personally fall asleep before my head hits the pillow…

And I’m not one to remember to rub oil on myself…

So I take a magnesium tablet.

Since I take it for my hormones…

I take it at night.

Remember I take all hormone supplements at night…

And all other supplements in the morning.
